19-year-old Hispanic suspect arrested after firing 36 shots with a rifle in Salt Lake City

South Salt Lake Police arrested a Hispanic suspect of having participated in a shooting early Thursday. The incident occurred at LeBanke Apartments, a block of flats located east of that city. Diego Alberto Vega, 19, was arrested by police at a West Valley residence.
“Thirty-six spent shell casings and various other evidence were collected from the scene in South Salt Lake City,” the police department reported.
Diego Alberto Vega faces charges of aggravated assault and discharge a firearm in the direction of a person.
An area resident walking his dog saw a man and woman next to his vehicle. The man, later identified as Vega, was trying to break into his car.

The victim asked his wife to call the police and upon leaving discovered that the suspects’ car had moved. Individuals inside the car started shooting at him.
During the shooting, several parked vehicles were hitcausing more than $5,000 worth of damage.

Vega was later located at a West Valley City residence, where two rifles were found. The man is prohibited from possessing weapons due to a prior aggravated robbery conviction. He was booked into the Salt Lake City County Jail, without bond.
