2022 World Cup: Who’s on Team USA?

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is just around the corner as the months pass by in quick time. Before we know it, we will be watching the greatest soccer tournament in the entire world taking place before our eyes in Qatar.

Of course, this year’s competition is one that is different from almost each and every single edition to have ever taken place before it. For instance, the tournament will feature a number of technological innovations, while it will also be the first to be held in the Middle East, thus subsequently giving us a competition that takes place in the winter of the European soccer season, too.

Nonetheless, it is one that many in North America will be looking forward to, especially as it will be the first FIFA World Cup 2022 that the USMNT will be involved in since the 2014 edition. The country had an embarrassing qualifying campaign for the 2018 tournament in Russia and eventually failed to book their place when many had expected them to do so.

There has been plenty of chance since then, though, and The Stars and Stripes will be feeling optimistic about their chances in the upcoming sporting spectacle. They will be hoping to their last appearance of making the Round of 16; something that had achieved in both the 2010 and 2014 tournaments in South Africa and Brazil respectively.

Who will the USMNT face in the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

Of course, we already know that the USMNT are going to have their work cut out for them if they are to try and qualify for the Round of 16 in this year’s event. They have been placed inside Group B alongside England, Wales, and Iran. The Three Lions are among the favorites to win the competition this year after an impressive showing at the 2020 European Championships, while Wales and Iran are going to be tough opposition. According to the betting odds for World Cup, USA is the 3rd favorite in Group B.

  1. England -333
  2. Wales +550
  3. USA +600
  4. Iran +1100

As can be seen from the above, it would appear as though the USMNT has a chance of qualifying, although it may depend on whether they are able to get a positive result against Wales if they are to have any chance. England is perhaps unlikely, whereas Iran should end up in victory; of course, that is when looking on paper and that is something we can not always do when it comes down to soccer or professional sports as a whole.

Who could the USMNT call upon for the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

One reason why there is such confidence surrounding the USMNT’s chances of having a successful and potentially progressive competition is the fact that they have a pool of players that are perhaps as talented as any other squad that The Stars and Stripes have ever had in their history.
Of course, many will be looking at Christian Pulisic as the main man to guide them in Qatar, although many will be hoping that the sacking of Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea will allow “Captain America” to find his feet and get more opportunities to shine in the lead up to the tournament.

However, while many will be pinning their hopes on the attacker, there is no doubt that there is quality through the squad and Gregg Berhalter is in a position that many before him have not been able to experience before.

The likes of Tyler Adams and Brendan Aaronson are performing well at Leeds United thus far, while Jesús Ferreira has been clinical in front of goal for FC Dallas so far in the MLS this season, netting 16 goals. Goalkeeper Sean Johnson has equally been impressive for New York City FC, keeping a league-leading 13 clean sheets (along with Andre Blake).

Final Thoughts

There is still plenty of football left to be played between now and the time that Berhalter will be required to select his squad of players, therefore it can be rather difficult to try and predict who will be in The Stars and Stripes team. Nonetheless, the USMNT will have confidence and will want to put on a top showing as they host the 2026 event!
