5 teas that help lower cholesterol



Traditional teas and some herbal teas can help lower blood cholesterol levels, as revealed by research.

High cholesterol contributes to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart disease and stroke, explains the American Heart Association.

The effects of infusions on cholesterol do not happen immediately. Most studies record an improvement in cholesterol after weeks of consuming the teas.

1. Green tea

The consumption of green tea and green tea lowers the levels of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) in the blood. Such an effect would be due to the high content of polyphenols such as flavonols and catechins in teas made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant.

In a 2015 test-tube study published in Medical Sciences notes that dandelion leaf and root extract decreased the accumulation of triglycerides in fat cells. Research has been done in test-tube and animal studies, human research is needed.

4. Rooibos tea

Rooibos tea is also known as red tea or red bush tea. The consumption of this tea full of antioxidants may help lower “bad” LDL cholesterol and raise “good” HDL cholesterol in people at risk of heart disease, according to the results of a study shared by Healthline.

5. Mint tea

Peppermint tea may help lower cholesterol by helping the body produce bile. Bile aids digestion and helps enzymes break down fats into fatty acids, which can be taken into the body through the digestive tract.
