87-year-old grandfather graduates from college the same day as his granddaughter

A duet Grandpa-Granddaughter from San Antonio, Texas, who turned viral in 2016 for being classmates in the same college makes headlines again after his graduation in the same educational institution.

Age is just a number, especially for those with high ambitions. The same goes for René Neira, 87, who obtained his bachelor’s degree last Saturday. Surprisingly his granddaughter, Melanie Salazar, 23, also graduated the same day.

But Neira and Salazar have much more in common than graduating the same day from The University of Texas at San Antonio. Their phenomenal history of completing education together shows that it is never too late to pursue goals.

Salazar and Neira went viral in 2016

AmericanPost.News reports that this is not the first time that the grandfather and granddaughter have made headlines. In 2016, Salazar tweeted a photo of his grandfather on his first day of school at Palo Alto College, San Antonio, Texas. Neira shared her aspirations to complete a college degree in 2016, and she finally achieved it this year.

Salazar was a freshman at the time, and Neira was enrolled in her last class required to complete her associate’s degree in economics. Her story went viral around the world and was even featured on BuzzFeed News.

Neira attended St. Mary’s University in the 1950s, but discontinued her studies after meeting his wife and starting a family. He took classes here and there, but decided to resume full-time education after the death of his wife in 2009.

“Sometimes I wonder, what the hell is an 82 year old doing, going to college? But somehow, something keeps me going. I think it also keeps me mentally alert,” shared the tender Grandpa what was done viral Recently.
