Why is Amazon removing this option for HBO Max subscribers?
Prime Video will eliminate HBO Max as a subscription extra in August 2021, as reflected in the wall, that the partnership was coming to an end. This was only the “last step” to remove HBO Max from the platform completely. Although there are still mysteries, this has in fact been a behind-the-scenes process since 2020. You may recall that, in recent years, Amazon has been in a deal with HBO to give you access to some shows (such as The Sopreanos, Boardwalk Empire, and The Wire. ) for Prime Video subscribers at no additional cost.
But HBO Max launched in mid-2020, and it’s understandable that HBO wanted to bring that content home to be an exclusive part of its programming for the new streaming service. The months passed between the time that HBO Max was launched and an app for it appeared on the Amazon Fire TV platforms. At the time, this was described by The Verge as a “dispute” between the two companies over revenue sharing and producer place in the Amazon ecosystem. The app now exists for Amazon’s streaming devices, but collaboration content between the companies will disappear.
The experience that HBO Max subscribers are going through with Amazon adds to the hassle of setting up a new account. It is also a situation that we can all learn from. Unless there is a financial incentive to do a deal with a third party, you are generally better off dealing directly with the streaming service directly when it comes to billing matters. That way, you have a way to control your access to content with each individual streaming service. Got an HBO Max subscription through Prime Video?
