Shooting at Atlantic Station leaves at least one dead and five wounded
Atlanta police said a group arrived on 17th Street, near the downtown connector overpass, and around 8 p.m., an argument broke out that ended in gunfire on Market Street. After receiving the emergency report, police arrived at the scene and found multiple gunshot victims.
One of the victims died at the scene from his injuries, and five others were rushed to the hospital, said Atlanta Police Lt. Germain Dearlove. According to local authorities, the six people who were shot were between the ages of 15 and 21.
Multiple victims at the hospital
Local police believe the shooting may have been between two groups, so multiple shooters are possible. Authorities detailed that APD officers and Atlantic Station personnel had escorted a group off the Atlantic Station property around 8 p.m.
They were removed from the site for “unruly behavior” and violating curfew, Dearlove said. At that point, after they were removed from the Atlantic Station area, a violent argument broke out that ended in a deadly shooting, WSBTV reported.
Authorities continue to work to obtain surveillance footage from surrounding businesses and residences while investigating what could have been the motive for the dispute between the youths who were already breaking the rules by their mere presence in the area, reported 11 Alive.
According to Atlantic Station’s official website, as of 3 p.m., there is a curfew for children under 18 who a parent or guardian does not accompany. Youth groups of four or more are also not allowed.
Busy Atlantic Station
“Community safety remains our top priority, and we are working closely with law enforcement during this active investigation,” commented a spokesperson for Atlantic Station, a popular shopping and entertainment destination in Atlanta, busy this holiday season for Black Friday and holiday shopping.
An Atlantic Station resident managed to record from his apartment window the moment police, ambulances, and emergency crews arrived to attend to the emergency. In the meantime, police are seeking to identify the parties involved.
