Seven people drowned in the waters of the Sea of Cortez, including women and babies, when a boat they were riding in the port of Guaymas, in the northern Mexican state of Sonora, capsized, authorities reported Monday.

After the accident, attributed to “recklessness”, the Secretary of the Navy-Navy and firefighters managed to rescue 11 people.

The events, revealed just this Monday, occurred on Sunday afternoon, shortly before 3:00 p.m. local time (22:00 GMT), in front of the “Rodolfo Sánchez Taboada” industrial fishing park, in an area known as the Paraje Viejo.

Members of the same family were walking in a small boat that capsized due to speed and waves.

The boat “was for the exclusive use of fishing and not for the transfer of passers-by, since it did not have seats or life jackets, and was not enabled for maneuvers outside its nature,” reported Civil Protection of the Government of Sonora.

Search and rescue elements from the Secretary of the Navy, Fourth Naval Region, eight elements of the Fire Department and Civil Protection in Guaymas participated in the rescue operation, who used two search and rescue vessels, a UH-60 helicopter with a crew of five people.

The authorities argued that the driver of the boat, who remains as a missing person, ignored maritime security, since he did not have radio communication and his crew did not notify the authorities that they would go out for a walk.

“Apparently, the panga (boat) was taken without permission by the son of its owner, in order to walk his relatives, who would later suffer the accident,” added Civil Protection.
