The Brazilian bodybuilding community is mourning the loss of one of its rising young stars, 29-year-old Christian Franco Figueiredo, who died unexpectedly on October 17th, 2023, during a routine surgery.
Figueiredo, known to fans as “Chris,” had recently won the 2023 Musclecontest Brazil tournament, earning his professional IFBB card and cementing his status as a top contender in the Open division. His impressive physique and charismatic personality had earned him over 100,000 Instagram followers, and his future in the sport looked extremely promising.
However, a tragic turn of events during what should have been a simple medical procedure has left his family, friends, and fans reeling.
A Fateful Decision
According to Chris’ close friend and fellow bodybuilder, Fernando Ramos, Chris had recently decided to undergo elective surgery to remove small benign nodules from his liver despite doctors assuring him they were harmless. Ramos stated on Instagram, “He was so careful about his own health that this surgery was optional because the doctors said he could live with those small nodules in the liver without major problems.”
Nevertheless, Chris opted for the surgery, perhaps wanting to eliminate any potential issues before beginning his professional career. Tragically, this fateful decision would end up costing him his life.
A Routine Procedure Turns Deadly
On October 17th, Chris checked into Hospital das ClĂnicas in SĂŁo Paulo, Brazil to finally have the nodules removed. By all accounts, he took every precaution leading up to the surgery, undergoing extensive testing and medical evaluations to ensure he was cleared for the routine procedure.
However, shortly after the surgery commenced, Chris suffered sudden cardiac arrest brought on by internal hemorrhaging. Doctors were unable to resuscitate him, and he was pronounced dead that same day.
The exact circumstances surrounding the medical emergency are still unclear. But according to Chris’ friends, including fellow bodybuilder Ricardo “Rudeboy” Martins, who was present at the hospital, something went horribly wrong during the surgery, causing the internal bleeding that claimed Chris’ life.
A Shocking Loss
News of Chris’ untimely passing sent shockwaves through the bodybuilding community, with fans and competitors alike struggling to process the loss of such a vibrant, rising talent. Chris’ wife, Viviane Torres, emotionally announced his death on social media, writing, “A husband. A son. A brother. An athlete. A friend who left an incredible legacy.”
Chris’ sponsors, including supplement company Darkness Nation, also released statements mourning the charismatic bodybuilder. He clearly impacted many lives during his far too-short career.
While the details surrounding Chris’ death are still emerging, one thing is clear – his passing is an immense loss for the bodybuilding world. At just 29 years old, he appeared to have a limitless future ahead of him as a champion competitor. That bright future was tragically cut short by an unthinkable accident during a routine procedure.
Chris’ legacy will live on through those he inspired during his meteoric rise in the sport. But his death is a sobering reminder of just how quickly even the strongest and healthiest among us can be taken from this world without warning. The bodybuilding community will surely honor Chris by emulating his work ethic and unwavering commitment to bettering his physique.
