Bronx bottle attack: NYPD officer assaulted during tobacco store inspections

Jose Garcia slid up behind the NYPD officer and hit her with the bottle while standing on the sidewalk with another officer outside a tobacco store in the Bronx.

A Hispanic man snuck up behind an NYPD officer by hitting her in the head with a glass bottle, an attack caught on camera in The Bronx on Monday, authorities and law enforcement sources said.

The officer was assaulted by the subject at approximately 2:00 p.m. near 231st Street and Broadway while conducting tobacco store inspections with the New York City Sheriff’s Department, sources and police said.

Identified as Jose Garcia, slid up behind the officer and struck her with the bottle while she was standing on the sidewalk with another officer, according to police and images posted on social media.

After the first blow, the suspect continued to chase the police as other officers pushed him away, according to video footage.

The NYPD said the injured officer was transported to Saint Barnabas Hospital for treatment.

The 45-year-old Hispanic man was charged with assault, obstructing government administration, resisting arrest, menacing, criminal possession of a weapon, and harassment.

Garcia had 11 prior arrests, according to sources.

Lately, tobacco stores throughout the Big Apple have been illegally selling marijuana and other products, so police have been conducting various inspections of smoking stores.
