Brother of Marine Killed During US Withdrawal from Afghanistan Commits Suicide, Reports Say

The brother of a young Marine killed during the US withdrawal from Afghanistan has committed suicide during a recent memorial service. almost a year after the death of the soldier.

According to a press release from the Riverside County, California Sheriff’s Office, 28-year-old Dakota Halverson, who was the older brother of Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui, 20 years old. However, few details were offered.

“The older brother of one of the 13 soldiers killed in an attack recently committed suicide at his little brother’s memorial”Florida Republican Rep. Mike Waltz said Saturday.

Nikoui, from Norco, California, was one of 13 US soldiers killed on August 26, 2021, when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive outside Kabul’s Hamid Karzai airport as thousands of Americans and Afghan allies tried to evacuate the country in the face of the establishment of the Taliban government that began to control the Afghan capital.

A GoFundMe set up to pay for Halverson’s funeral and burial services has already surpassed $30,000.

“Dakota Halverson was my son, brother and loving friend,” wrote Shana Chappell, late mother. “Losing her brother almost a year ago has been too much to bear. Any donations towards his burial and services would be greatly appreciated as he wanted to be buried alongside his brother Kareem, who was killed on August 26, 2021 while serving his country. His family and I want to honor his wishes.”

The parents of the fallen infantryman and Halverson have been vocal critics of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark A. Milley, over the chaotic pullout from Afghanistan in August last year that marked the end of nearly 20 years of war.
