Canelo Alvarez dismisses Conor McGregor’s challenge, eyes Dmitry Bivol rematch

Mexican boxing champ unphased by McGregor's challenge, prioritizing intriguing September rematch with Russia's Bivol.

On more than one occasion, Saul Canelo Alvarez has said that his priority is to get a rematch against Russian Dmitry Bivol. Still, in recent months there have been some very interesting names for his fight next September, such as American David Benavidez.

However, UFC star Conor McGregor has already challenged the Mexican multi-champion a few days ago.

In this regard, Canelo assured on Wednesday that he would easily beat the Irishman. This is what he said during the unveiling of his figure at the Wax Museum in Mexico City.

“With one hand (he would beat him),” he replied.

It should be recalled that The Notorious already tried his luck in the ring in December 2017 against Floyd Mayweather Jr, in a bout that generated great anticipation for both boxing and mixed martial arts fans. And it was an absolute ratings success, with more than 4 million households on PPV.

However, the American went out undefeated, winning by a unanimous decision.

Alvarez was accompanied by Congressman Miguel Torruco, a personal friend of his, who praised the Jalisco fighter’s career as a preamble to unveiling his wax figure.

“I want to thank the Wax Museum, Miguel (Torruco), who was very important to be here,” he said, referring to the official.

Canelo maintained that when his children admire him at the Wax Museum, “they will feel very proud to see me here.”

On the other hand, on whether he would like to fight at the Azteca Stadium as Julio César Chávez did in his time, he answered: “Anywhere in Mexico, for me, it is an honor. I don’t rule out the possibility; maybe not right now, in the short term, but I don’t rule it out”.

“The following week, I will meet to see what is coming in September,” although to the question of who he would like more for that fight, if David Benavidez or Bivol, he affirmed, “Bivol, but if it gets ‘regejo,’ I would look for more options.”

“Canelo” Alvarez has had a remarkable career in professional boxing. Still, only three fights have been against Mexican opponents: Julio Cesar Chavez in 2017, Alfredo Angulo in 2014, and Alfonso Gomez in 2011.

He faced several Mexican boxers early in his professional career, including Francisco Villanueva, Abraham Gonzalez, Miguel Vazquez, Pedro Lopez, and Jorge Juarez. However, he has not stepped into the ring with a compatriot since his fight with Chavez Jr.

Different fighters, critics, and the same public sports fans have wondered why Canelo does not fight Mexicans, to which he answered at some point: “They say I’m afraid, but I’m not afraid of anyone, and I don’t avoid any fighter. Benavidez doesn’t bring me anything,” he said in an interview with World Boxing News. “Tell me which champion you have fought before. I beat every champion in the division.”

He added, “I represent Mexico and don’t like fighting Mexicans. I don’t see the point. I see potential in Jaime Munguia, but he still needs some fight to reach those levels. I don’t close myself to anything, but for now, I wouldn’t like it”.

A series that serves as an example

‘Canelo’ Alvarez said he does not see close the probability of making a movie of his life, as he is not ready yet.

“Yes, I have been offered to do documentaries, a Netflix series, but it’s not the time yet. I don’t feel comfortable. But for everything, there is time, and its time will come.”
