Chargers Looking to Rebound After Quick Start and Quicker Fall in 2022

Chargers enter 2023 with high hopes, face tough schedule; Herbert emerges as MVP contender; defense seeks improvement.

Brandon Staley and the Los Angeles Chargers got off to a quick start in 2022, only to see it come crashing down in the postseason. The Chargers started the season with four wins in their first six games. Los Angeles went into the Week 7 games with a 4-2 record after wins over the Raiders, Texans, Browns, and Broncos.

The team also won their final four out of five regular season games to get to the postseason. In the postseason, the Chargers were forced to go on the road to take on the AFC South-winning Jacksonville Jaguars. Things looked great for the Chargers, with a quick 17-0 lead after one and a 27-7 lead at halftime. The second half was a disaster, with the Chargers being outscored 24-3 and saw a game-winning field goal send their season to an end. The crowd of more than 70,000 in Jacksonville loved what they saw in one of the best NFL games of the season.

ReCharge for 2023

Now, the Chargers come into the 2023 season with renewed energy and a ton of optimism. The Chargers will get the 2023 party started with a huge game out of the AFC. The Chargers are at home Sunday, September 10th, and will take on another AFC threat. The Charters and Dolphins will meet, and Los Angeles is -2.5, with a total of 50 points in the game.

This is a great game to bet on and will see a Miami team be forced to travel across the country in their first game of the season. This game also features two up-and-coming quarterbacks; Justin Herbert of the Chargers against Tua Tagovailoa.

When looking at the Chargers win total, most oddsmakers will have it listed at 9.5 wins. The over is the slight favorite. This could be quite the challenge for Staley and his Chargers, as they get an AFC West home and away game with each.

That includes the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs, the Denver Broncos under new head coach Sean Payton, along with the Las Vegas Raiders. Other notable games on the 2023 Los Angeles Chargers schedule include trips to Minnesota and New England, with home games against the Ravens and Bills.

If you like the Los Angeles Chargers, and their potential chances to win Super Bowl LVIII, you can find them listed at +3000. There are 7 AFC teams listed ahead of them. Keep in mind that only 7 teams make the postseason out of the AFC. The Chargers are just behind the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are listed at +2500. The Jaguars, of course, eliminated the Chargers a season ago.

MVP Candidate at Quarterback

Justin Herbert from LA Chargers

Justin Herbert is fifth on the list of odds to win the 2023 Most Valuable Player award. All the candidates are ahead of Herbert to play the quarterback position. Three of them are in the AFC, as the Kansas City Chiefs, Cincinnati Bengals, and Buffalo Bills are pretty established to be contenders.

The other is the signal caller from the Philadelphia Eagles – Jalen Hurts. Herbert is tied with Lamar Jackson at +1200 to win the award. Jackson and Herbert are in the same boat of on the outside looking in for a chance in the AFC.

Talent Throughout

While Justin Herbert is the big name in the offense, this team has plenty of other weapons. Herbert will look to team up with a pair of elite receivers with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Quentin Johnson, Josh Palmer, and Jalen Guyton will look to square off to see who earns the third receiver role.

Austin Ekeler is back at running back for the Chargers and is poised for a huge season. Ekeler has seen most of his damage in his career with the Chargers done via the passing game more than the run game. But do not be surprised when Ekeler gets carries and gets into the endzone early and often for the Chargers in 2023.

There are plenty of great opportunities to bet on the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023. This is a tough team to figure out because they literally have the talent to win a Super Bowl but also have the potential to win 6 games and fall last in the division.
