Chinatown accident: One dead and one injured by driver of SUV that crashed into a bus bench

One person was killed and another seriously injured after an SUV crashed into a bus stop bench Wednesday afternoon in downtown Los Angeles, authorities said.

The accident happened at approximately 4:20 p.m. near the intersection of Broadway and Bernard Streetreported the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).

A person who was on the bench died at the scene of the incident.

The second victim who was hit by the SUV was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

Footage from the crash site showed the SUV lying on the sidewalk, while the bus stop bench was crushed between the car and a fence.

Authorities did not provide the identities of the person who died or the person who was seriously injured.

Until now, the circumstances of the accident had not been made clear.

The driver of the SUV was detained by authorities while the police worked to determine if the person responsible was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
