The 30th Liquidating Criminal Court of the Superior Court of Lima ordered a sentence of two years in prison suspended for one year of rules of conduct for both journalists and also the payment of a civil compensation of 400 thousand soles in favor of Cesar Acuña. The sentence – to which both presented an appeal – did not take long to be questioned on social networks.

Through Twitter, the journalist convicted in the first instance expressed his consternation at the court ruling. “Speechless. I don’t know what to say, ”he initially commented.
The National Association of Journalists raised its voice stating that this sentence is a serious attack on journalistic activity. “The ANP repudiates the sentence to two years in prison suspended and the joint payment of a civil compensation of 400 thousand soles to the journalist,” they said.
The Press and Society Institute (IPYS) also expressed its rejection through a statement. On his website, he emphasized that “he considers that Judge Vega issued an aberrational sentence, that sets a dismal precedent for journalism ”.
For his part, Fernando Gimeno, president of the Foreign Press Association in Peru, also regretted the judicial conviction, which he considered a “sentence that will remain for the black history of the Judiciary.”
