Construction incident injures three workers at Tren Maya construction site; workers receive medical care and an investigation is ongoing.

The Tren Maya is a major railroad infrastructure project under construction in the Yucatán peninsula region of Mexico. The project aims to build a modern passenger and freight railway to boost tourism and economic development in the region.

Incident Occurs During Construction on Section 6

On the morning of February 8th, 2023, an incident occurred at the Tren Maya construction site near Pedro A. Santos and Vía Corta a Mérida, where work was underway on section 6 of the project.

According to details provided by Tren Maya authorities, three workers were injured when rods from a retaining wall fell on them. “Regarding the incident in Section 6, #TrenMaya clarifies that the incident occurred the morning of Feb. 8, and there were 3 workers involved, who were transferred to IMSS No. 149 and were discharged the same day as they did not present serious injuries,” the railway operator said in a tweet.

Workers Receive Medical Care and Are Discharged

The three workers hit by the falling rods were transported to IMSS Medical Clinic No. 149 for treatment. Fortunately, the workers did not sustain life-threatening injuries in the incident. All three were discharged from the hospital on the same day.

Ongoing Investigation Into Exact Cause

While the outcome for the injured workers was not severe, authorities stressed that they would conduct an exhaustive investigation to determine the causes of the collapse of the retaining wall.

This incident comes after two previous deaths occurred on the Palenque section of the railway project in 2021 when a landslide buried workers. Improving safety practices on the Tren Maya construction sites continues to be a priority.
