Drinking coffee can improve your mood and reduce the risk of depression

Coffee is a stimulating drink that can improve your mood and reduce the risk of depression. It can also increase alertness, energy, and ability to concentrate. Some studies reveal that coffee may help reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Research suggests that 75 mg of caffeine (the equivalent of a cup of coffee) every four hours can result in a pattern of sustained improvement in mood throughout the day, as shared by the Institute of Scientific Information on Coffee (ISIC).

Coffee has hundreds of biologically active compounds including caffeine and polyphenols that act as antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory effects. Both caffeine and polyphenols can have effects on brain health.

The Harvard School of Public Health shares that the polyphenols found in coffee can act as antioxidants to reduce oxidative damage and inflammation of cells. Which can have neurological benefits in some people and act as an antidepressant.

“There is evidence that coffee polyphenols can cross the blood-brain barrier, exert anti-neuroinflammatory effects and even promote neurogenesis, which results in a reduction in the risk of cognitive and affective disorders ”, says Giuseppe Grosso, professor at the Department of Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Catania.

Caffeine can also affect mental states, such as increasing alertness and attention, reducing anxiety, and improving mood.

Harvard shares that a meta-analysis of different studies that included 330,677 participants found a 24% reduction in the risk of depression associated with an intake of four to five cups of coffee.

A study published in Plos One in 2014 that followed 263,923 participants from the National Institutes of Health and the American Retirees Association found that those who drank 4 or more cups of coffee a day were nearly 10% less likely to become depressed than those that they did not drink anything.

Excessive coffee consumption can have negative effects

While moderate coffee consumption can be beneficial for the brain, consuming too much has been associated with smaller total brain volumes and an increased risk of dementia as shown in a recent study by researchers at the University of South Australia.

Moderate coffee consumption is considered between three and five cups per day. The suggested healthy adult caffeine intake is up to 400 mg of caffeine. An 8-ounce cup of brewed coffee contains approximately 95 mg of caffeine.

Too much caffeine can have negative effects such as anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, and increased heart rate.

Pregnant women should consume less than 200 mg of caffeine per day, the amount in 2 cups of coffee. Caffeine passes through the placenta to the fetus and has been associated with pregnancy loss and low birth weight.
