Easter holidays: The 5 most polluted beaches in Mexico

Mexico.- Every time is closer the Holy Weekvacation period that many families take advantage of to enjoy days of rest in beach tourist destinations, which is why each year the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) launches a report on the tourist beaches that whether or not they are suitable for recreational use.

In his most recent report on Clean beachesCofepris analyzed more than two thousand seawater samples from Mexican beaches, where it was determined that 98.5% can be qualified as suitable, however, there are five destinations that pose health risks.

How does Cofepris determine the suitable beaches or not?

According to the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) to analyze if a beach is suitable or not, the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) are taken into account, which determine the maximum presence of 200 enterococci for every 100 milliliters of water.

What is Enterococcus bacteria?

Enterococcus is a bacterium that occurs naturally in the intestines of all people. In general, it is not a harmful or virulent bacteria, however, when they infect the urinary tract, wounds or blood, their treatment is very difficult, even life-threatening.

On the other hand, the information of Cofepris indicates that, of 270 guarded beaches in Mexico, 265 are suitable for recreational use, according to quality criteria. The reports of each state are available on the digital platform of the federal agency of the Mexican government, as well as in the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).
