An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fetus develops outside of the mother’s womb and, although it does not occur often, it may come as a surprise to the most experienced physicians. This was the case with a baby growing in its mother’s liver and astonished doctors at the Research Institute of Manitoba Children’s Hospital in Canada.
In a video shared on his TikTok account, pediatrician Michael Narvey recounted the amazing case he attended. “I thought I had seen it all: a 33-year-old woman comes in with a 14-day history of menstrual bleeding and 49 days since her last menstrual period. What they find in the liver is this: a baby, ”the doctor wrote.
The specialist explains that often an ectopic pregnancy occurs somewhere in the womb, “but never in the liver. It’s the first time that I see it”. Thanks to the intervention of the doctors, the woman’s life was saved, but they could not do anything for the fetus.
According to research from Peking University, ectopic pregnancies that occur in the liver are exceptionally rare, to the point that between 1964 and 1999 only 14 cases were recorded. Frequently, ectopic pregnancies occur in the fallopian tubes, the cervix or the ovaries, and there are about 12,000 cases a year.
Given the concern of the users of the video network about how such a strange pregnancy could have occurred, Dr. Narvey made another video where he explains how an ectopic pregnancy can occur after the egg and sperm meet.
“This must have been devastating news for the parents. I hope mom is well and I am sorry for her loss, ”wrote one user. “I am an ultrasound technician and the liver would be the last place I would look an ectopic pregnancy, “said another. “I had an ectopic pregnancy that erupted in my abdomen and filled it with blood. I almost died, ”explained another.
