Edson Álvarez regretted not being in Tokyo 2020: “It is a very important event and I would have liked to be”

The Mexican Tri is one triumph away from advancing to the grand final of the Gold Cup 2021, when they face Canada this Thursday at NRG Stadium in Houston. And if some believe that Mexico should win without problems, Edson Alvarez tried to lower the decibels of tricolor favoritism and also regretted not being in Tokyo 2020.

“There is increasing preparation of the rivals and we are living it today. Canada, the United States and Qatar have been playing very well. There is no small rival ”, declared the defensive midfielder who screwed Gerardo Martino into the line-up.

Mexico‘s objective is to advance to its 14th final in the history of the Gold Cup, then they will have time to analyze and prepare that possible scenario depending on the rival: the United States or Qatar.

He highlighted the growth of the Concacaf teams, especially that of Canada, which has been unquestionably defeating Costa Rica with a score of 2-0.

“Canada has given a good feeling, it has been the protagonist in many games. If tomorrow (Thursday) we come out focused and forceful as in the last games, it will be a game of good feelings for us ”, declared the man from Guadalajara.

I wanted to be in Tokyo 2020

Álvarez, a Dutch Ajax tab, is two steps away from being the Gold Cup champion and his gaze is still far from the Tri Olímpico that advanced to the quarterfinals at the Olympic Games.

“For me it was not a mental blow. I am a professional and I am where I am. Unfortunately it was not my turn due to circumstances, but I represent my country, I am about to play a Semifinal ”, said the 23-year-old midfielder, eligible to be the Olympic team.

However, he does not lose the illusion of attending Paris 2024 or Los Angeles 2028 as a reinforcement of his country.

“The Olympic Games are a very important event and I would have liked to be there. I am young and I hope in the future to have the opportunity to play them. Where I am I try to do my best. It makes me proud to see where my fellow Olympians are, “he said.
