Mexican actress Eiza González will guest star in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming series Mr. & Mrs. Smith, based on the 2005 action comedy film starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
González joins previously announced stars Donald Glover, Maya Erskine, Alexander Skarsgård, Sarah Paulson, Sharon Horgan, Ron Perlman, Billy Campbell, and Úrsula Corberó in the series, set to debut February 2, 2024, according to Variety.
Prime Video Releases Trailer and Additional Guest Stars
On Wednesday, Prime Video released the first full trailer and revealed additional guest stars set to appear in the series. Beyond the main cast, episodes will feature appearances from stars like Rakeem “Keem” Jones, Jessica Chastain, Janelle Monáe, Zooey Deschanel, Samara Weaving, and Caleb McLaughlin.
“So proud of Maya and Donalds vision for this show,” González wrote in an Instagram post about the trailer release. “I couldn’t resist jumping on board to play a little bit.”
Glover serves as co-creator and executive producer on the series alongside showrunner Francesca Sloane. Known for creating unique takes on existing IP, like with his Emmy-winning FX series Atlanta, Glover aimed to put a modern spin on the Mr. & Mrs. Smith concept.
Glover Modernizes Relationship Premise for 2024
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Glover explained his vision to use the framework of the original film starring married rival spies to explore deeper questions about relationships.
“Why do people get married? Half of it ends in divorce, what’s the purpose?” Glover said. “Let’s do a series that’s about relationships, but from this point of view, focusing more on what a marriage really is and trust and teamwork and loneliness and all that stuff.”
While plot details remain secret, the logline describes the show following “two spies hired by competing agencies to kill each other, who instead fall in love.” This aligns with the premise of married couple John and Jane Smith, assassins working for enemy sides unbeknownst to each other, in the 2005 film.
González Continues Breakout Hollywood Success
The series marks González’s latest high-profile role after breakout appearances in Hollywood blockbusters like Baby Driver alongside Ansel Elgort and the Fast and Furious franchise.
González has swiftly built her English-language acting career after getting her start in Mexican telenovelas. She earned attention for her role as Santanico Pandemonium in From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series on El Rey Network.
Prime Video has steadily invested in Latin talent, recently working with stars like Diego Luna in the new sci-fi series La Brea and producing shows like With Love and Mexican comedy series LOL: Last One Laughing Mexico.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith Looks To Recreate Movie’s Success
The original Mr. & Mrs. Smith film grossed nearly $500 million worldwide, showcasing surprising comedic chemistry between Pitt and Jolie.
At the time, their budding off-screen relationship fueled tabloid excitement. Pitt very publicly left his marriage with Jennifer Aniston as he grew closer to Jolie during production.
While it remains to be seen if the Prime Video series will replicate this success, showrunner Sloane believes the ability to further explore marriage and relationships over multiple episodes sets the show apart.
“2020 really affected the way we were looking at relationships, and we started to realize the things that really mattered when something like this is happening to the world is love and trust and a comfortable nest,” Sloane told EW.
