Qatari Mutaz Essa Barshim and Italian Gianmarco Tamberi made history this Sunday at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020: after achieving a tie in the high jump With a 2.37m mark, both decided not to try to beat the other and share the gold medal.

The judge approached the competitors to comment that they could still try to beat their marks to get the gold. Mutaz Barshim asked the judge if they would both win the gold medal if they didn’t compete anymore, and the judge pointed out that it was a possibility.

None of the athletes gave it much thought. They both saw each other and recognized each other’s effort. The gold was assured and excitement took over the running track. Gianmarco Tamberi jumped into a hug with his Qatari rival.

Of the best moments of Tokyo 2020.
