Remington Arms has agreed to a settlement with several families of children killed in the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which killed 28 people, including 20 children.

It marks the first time a gunmaker has accepted responsibility for a mass shooting in the United States, after families sued the company over the way it marketed its Bushmaster AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle.

Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza was armed with his high-powered rifle during his attack in Newtown, Connecticut.

“Plaintiffs in this action give notice that a settlement agreement has been reached between the parties,” says a court document.
