A fight in a prison in the Mexican state of Colima left at least 8 inmates dead and another 7 more wounded, as confirmed by the state government.
“The Social Rehabilitation Center (Cereso) of Colima is under the control of the state authority after this morning a fight was registered between two groups of people deprived of their liberty in it, which left a preliminary balance of eight people dead and seven people injured, ”said the state government in a bulletin.
After the confrontation, the security authorities reviewed the bedrooms where they found seven people dead and eight more wounded who were taken to various hospitals.
One of the injured died at the hospital.added the statement. The authorities also found a firearm and other sharp weapons.
The altercation between rival groups occurred around 9:00 a.m. local time (3:00 p.m. GMT) on Tuesday in bedrooms A and B of the Colima Social Reintegration Center, where some detonations of firearms were heard, according to a statement from the state government.
The Governor of Colima, Indira Vizcaino, announced on his social network accounts that after the altercation, the Secretary of Public Security and the State Prosecutor’s Office, in addition to the National Guard, had regained control of the place.
“The events began after 9:00 a.m. and at 10:00 a.m. the state authority had total control of the situation in this penitentiary center. From the first moment, the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) and I have personally attended to this situation,” he said.
Mexico periodically registers riots and confrontations in its prisons, where overcrowding conditions and self-government -the control of the facilities- by the inmates often prevail.
At the beginning of January, a total of 56 inmates were injured in a fight in the Apodaca prison, in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo León.
