What you eat can influence sexual desire and function. Some foods and drinks can negatively affect libido, sexual performance, and overall health.

Foods that can affect your sex life

1. Salty foods

High sodium intake leads to high blood pressure that can cause erectile dysfunction and interfere with ejaculation. In women, hypertension can reduce blood flow to the vagina and make it difficult for smooth muscles to relax, which can cause vaginal dryness and difficulty reaching orgasm.

The UK National Health Service (NHS) notes that the more salt consumed, the higher the blood pressure. Among the saltiest foods are processed meats such as ham, sausages, bacon, bread, pizza, sandwiches, burgers, and burritos. Some cheeses are also high in salt.

2. Alcohol

A glass of wine or other alcoholic beverage can increase sexual desire, but excessive drinking can affect sexual function. Excessive alcohol consumption reduces blood flow to the penis, making an erection more difficult; it also reduces the intensity of orgasm and the level of arousal.

In women, alcohol abuse reduces blood flow to the vagina, there is less vaginal lubrication and difficulty reaching orgasm.

Mayo Clinic notes that heavy drinking can cause delayed ejaculation, and some men may not ejaculate at all.

3. Foods high in saturated fat

Consuming a large amount of saturated fat contributes to clogged arteries, poor blood flow, and weight gain, leading to erectile dysfunction.

Saturated fat is found mainly in foods of animal origin, such as meat, butter, cheese, and ice cream.

4. Sugary foods and drinks

Consuming foods and beverages with added sugar can affect sexual desire and function. “This constant insulin spike is linked to low testosterone levels,” urologist Jamin Brahmbhatt tells The Healthy.

Ingesting too much sugar is also linked to diabetes and inflammation in the body, which can mess up sexual function.

A healthy diet is associated with a lower risk of male and female sexual dysfunction. A diet keeps the heart healthy and pumping blood to the right places.
