Governor Samuel García Sepúlveda responds with grace to criticism over English pronunciation at a UN event in New York

The governor of Nuevo León took criticism and comparisons with former president Peña Nieto with grace.

Samuel García Sepúlveda, governor of Nuevo León, responded gracefully after being criticized for his English pronunciation at the Water Conference in the United States.

On March 24, the state governor participated in the New York United Nations General Assembly event. He spoke about some aspects Nuevo León is doing to improve its water practices.

Because his participation was in English, some quickly pointed out his pronunciation skills and even compared him to former President Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018).

Some made fun of the fact that with that level of English, he convinced magnate Elon Musk to invest in the state to install a Tesla electric car factory there.

“I even think that Samuel García imitates Peña Nieto with his bad English” and “We were super unfair with Peña” were comments of criticism by some.

On the other hand, some defended him, assuring that the structure of his utterances and pronunciation had no mistakes and that he only had a “Mexican” accent, which should not be severely criticized.

“I don’t care about Samuel Garcia, but I care more about the fact that in Mexico, the accent determines whether a person speaks English well or poorly. This guy knows how to speak English, and he speaks it well. He understands it. It shouldn’t be our goal to speak like gringos,” said one social media user.

“I love to make fun of Samuel García, but he doesn’t speak bad English. Yes, his accent is not perfect, but it’s part of the fact that it’s not his native language,” another person pointed out.

After the controversy, the governor of Nuevo León assured that he would start studying English to improve his skills and remarked that despite everything, he managed to get Elon Musk to invest in the state. In addition, he was amused when compared to Peña Nieto by using the phrase that put the former president under the eye of the hurricane.

Netizens celebrated the governor’s good disposition and continued to joke about Peña Nieto’s pronunciation.

He is good English, he just needs a little bit of infrastructchur” “Good there, @samuel_garcias, the important thing is to improve and work hard. Nobody is born knowing”, they said.

It is worth remembering that the phrase Samuel García used to joke about his pronunciation refers to an occasion when Peña Nieto could not pronounce infrastructure and instead vocalized infrestructochor with difficulty, as well as unacceptable, which he pronounced as unacseptabol.
