Hispanic sentenced to life in Texas stabs security guard and escapes from a bus

An Hispanic serving a life sentence in Texas, stabbed a bus driver, prompting an intense search between Dallas and Houston, authorities said.

Gonzalo Artemio López, 46, who was convicted in 2006 of killing another man with a pickaxe on the Texas-Mexico borderwas being flown in Texas from Gatesville to Huntsville for a medical appointment when he was somehow able to free himself from his restraints and stab the driver in the hand with an object, Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Robert Hurst.

Until now The object with which he attacked the driver has not been identified.

According to the authorities, López escaped after the vehicle crashed into a pasture of cows in rural Leon County, and fled around 1:20 p.m. Thursday.

The man is wanted by multiple law enforcement agencies. in an area near an interstate in Leon County. That county has about 16,000 residents and is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of the state prison headquarters.

The chief of staff of the Department of Criminal Justice of Texas, Jason Clark, indicated that at the time of the attack there were 16 prisoners on board the busbut no one else escaped.

The official explained that Lopez dominated the drivera correctional officer, but it was unclear if Lopez took control of the bus or if it just went off the road.

Regarding the condition of the driver after the attack, he indicated that they are not considered life-threatening.

According to prison records, Lopez was recently detained in a cell in Gatesvillemore than 100 miles (160 kilometers) from where authorities were searching.

Previously, the escape of some inmates from prison transport vehicles had already been recorded.

In 2019, an MMA fighter suspected of killing two people fled from a van and was missing for nine hours.
