“I’m devastated”, Canadian opponent of Mexican boxer Jeanette Zacarías who died after fight
The referee had to suspend the fight due to the state of health of one of the boxers.

Marie-Pier Houle, the opponent of the Mexican Jeanette Zacarías Zapata, in the boxing match prior to her death, expressed herself devastated by the outcome of the fight.

Zacarías Zapata, 18, died this Thursday as a result of injuries received during the meeting in Montreal last Saturday.

By the end of the fourth round, Houle landed a series of punches that affected Zacarías Zapata. The referee decided to suspend the fight after noticing that the Mexican boxer had trouble staying on her feet.

The fighter was rushed to the Sacré-Coeur-de-Montreal hospital after suffering seizures. There he was placed in an induced coma.

One day after the fight, the Quebecois shared a message on Facebook in which she expressed her sadness for what happened.

“After the sad news of the death of Jeanette Zacarías Zapata, I am devastated. I offer my sincere condolences to the family and her husband, Jovanni Martínez. May God enlighten your soul and receive it in his glory ”, reads part of the entry.

At the moment, the Quebec Forensic Office is investigating the death to determine the cause and circumstances of the death and to establish whether there was any type of mishandling or negligence.

The entity investigates deaths that occur in Quebec in unclear or violent circumstances or when it occurs in a context of negligence.

The Mexican had passed all the medical tests required by the Alcohol, Racing and Games Commission before her appointment in the ring on August 28.
