A record number of Americans are quitting their jobs across the country. The phenomenon is having a greater impact in three states: Georgia, Kentucky and Idaho where more than 4% of workers left their employment voluntarily in August.
This is not a coincidence, as states are among those with the lowest minimum wage in the country, where the rate is $ 7.25 per hour.
States with larger minimum wages tend to have a lower quit rate, according to the data of the Employment Office.
About 1.7% of Washington DC workers quit their job in August, the lowest quit rate of any state on record. The country’s capital also has one of the highest minimum wages of the country with $ 15.20 dollars an hour.
Nationwide 3% of workers resigned in August, a record, according to a government report.
About 4.3 million people quit their jobs that exceeded the number of layoffs that reported 1.3 million jobs during the same month.
It is not yet clear why the trend of resignations is due, however, there have been a number of incentives to change jobs, labor market conditions and fear of contracting COVID-19.
Experts point out that states with lower abandonment rates have more employment in sectors with lower turnover and they have higher minimum wages.
Also affected are the costs of living that are occurring throughout the country, from food, housing and the increase in prices.
The increase in the price of bills can also lead some people to seek higher paying jobs, while others decide to start their own businesses.
