Javier Aguirre, coach of the Rayados de Monterrey, recognized this Saturday that the elimination of his team in the second round of the Club World Cup after losing 1-0 to the Egyptian Al-Ahly is “an absolute failure”.
“It was a bad night, it was an absolute failure, but this goes on. The team is one that competes and this is not something that diverts us from the work we carry out. Although there are always consequences”, he said at a press conference after losing against the African champion.
Despite the negative result, Aguirre ruled out that he thinks of resigning from his position since he hopes to make amends for the “failure” with a good performance in his third league tournament at the helm of Monterrey, the Clausura 2022 of Mexican soccer.
“It’s early for that (to resign), the League is there, we’ve played three games in the tournament. This result was not what we expected, this elimination is a failure, but I feel strong to continue here”, he assured.
Losing against Al-Ahly meant another poor result in Aguirre’s management at Monterrey, adding to a pair of eliminations in the quarterfinals in his first two tournaments in the League.
The 62-year-old strategist has only been able to achieve last year’s Concacaf Champions League title with the most valuable squad in Mexico, which gave him a ticket to the Club World Cup.
“Today we lacked a bit of intelligence to stop their counterattacks, we didn’t understand that they were playing that game and when we tried to score a goal, they scored one for us”, he highlighted.
Aguirre apologized to the Monterrey fans for the loss against Al-Ahly that kicked them out of the fight for the Club World Cup title and forced them to play a match for fifth place against the loser of the duel between Saudi Al-Hilal and the Emirati Al-Jazira.
“The players and I are sorry. Apologies to the fans. We assume failure, but we must give the work and move forward, to what follows, ”he sentenced.
