Jonathan Velázquez and his friends were happy to go to Tulum, in Quintana Roo, to celebrate the bachelor party of one of them. The plans were to go to a festival called Zamna, full of DJs and EDM music that was planned from December 19, 2019, until January 8, 2020. Little did they know that organized crime would ruin their trip.
They arrived on January 4, 5, and 6 to see several artists they love. Unfortunately, the second night started to get weird. In the wee hours of the morning, after sleeping for a few hours, his friends convinced Jonathan to see the night’s star DJ, and they grabbed his stuff.
The series of unfortunate events, as recounted for GusGri’s Youtube channel, began when two of them used bag-like camera cases to throw in their cell phone, wallet, and some spending money throughout the night. This was to avoid theft inside the festival, as they had already caught them snitching on people.
This made them look suspicious to about 7 people who, at one point during the night, surrounded them, asked them where they were from, and were selling drugs. Jonathan and another friend were waiting for the rest of the group to enter the VIP area of the event. Even though they “passed the scales” and saw nothing wrong, they were moved to another part of the event.
It was the bathing area, in cabins away from the main stages. Some group members of gangsters locked them in one of the bathrooms and closed all the others so that no one could enter, and the strongest interrogations began—the beatings, insults, and abuse.
When they saw their IDs and confirmed that they were from the state of Jalisco, they mistook them for members of the elite Jalisco Cartel – New Generation group. This belief increased the tension between the friends and the victimizers, so the beatings increased.
Unfortunately, they found in the cell phone of one of them some photographs of weapons that had supposedly been sent to him but that he never deleted. At the same time, Jonathan had a photo of a joke gift given to a friend years ago shaped like a cocaine septum.
They tortured them for a long time, and in the end, they tried to suffocate their friend until he fainted and left him for dead, while they tried to cut Jonathan’s neck with a wooden kitchen knife. Once the blood began to flow, they left him for dead without checking anything and ran out of there.
Some Spanish citizens finally found them both lying on the floor and screamed in desperation. Still, it called the emergency services, and they arrived to take them both to a private hospital where they managed to stabilize them. Jonathan underwent surgery and remained in intensive care for a long time, while his friend regained consciousness sometime later.
They finally left Tulum and never returned to the area. So far, who was responsible for the attack is unknown, although they made their respective judicial statements. The Zamna event is still taking place, and they are already preparing for the 2024 event.
