Latino family went from laughter to tragedy: Puerto Rican grandmother was rolled to death after baby shower in the Bronx, New York

A Latino family in the Bronx (NYC) went from celebrating to tears, after matriarch Milagros Collazo Ríos was fatally run over on Sunday morning, the day after celebrating a baby shower for the granddaughter who will no longer know her.

Collazo Ríos, 67-year-old native of Puerto Rico, was crossing the intersection of E. 170th St. and Jerome Av on his way to the doctor to have his eyes examined, when a minivan hit her shortly before 10:00 am

NYPD said the unidentified driver remained at the scene and was not immediately charged. Accident investigators try to determine exactly what happened.

“She was a great mother, a great grandmother, she was my best friend”, said yesterday to ABC News his daughter Melinda Rosado. According to his relatives, Collazo loved to pamper his grandchildren. On Saturday, he went to a baby shower for his son and daughter-in-law, who They are expecting a girl for February 6, the same date as their now deceased grandmother’s birthday.

“I was excited buying all these baby clothes and sending me pictures,” Rosado said. And she added that usually after church on Sundays, they would go to their grandmother’s house to enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal. Now that tradition, like so many others, has sunk into tragedy.
