Although she loves her roots in Puerto Rico and is a “boricua” in every sense of the word, her passion for music is a very special part of her life, which is why she believes that you don’t need to be Mexican to sing ranchera music well, as evidenced by Mariel “La Abogada,” one of the new proposals in this genre.
In an interview with El Heraldo Digital, Mariel Colón Miro, the real name of the woman who now divides her time between her profession as a lawyer defending imposing characters, such as Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and Emma Coronel, said that for her it is a great triumph to have the opportunity to enjoy a new facet in her life.
She assured everyone that she was not afraid of being judged for her decision and invited people to get to know her music and listen to her voice before criticizing her. Although it is not new for her, other people’s opinions do not scare her, and she assures that she is prepared for whatever comes in her career as a grupera singer.

“Criticism is not something new for me, because I am already used to being criticized for what I am doing as a defense attorney, so criticism is not something new for me, there will always be those who speak negatively about you because you are not a hundred dollar bill to be liked by everyone, there will always be those who support you, there will always be those who do not, I do not do it for that, I do it to satisfy me personally,” said the star.
Mariel opens her career on the scene with a song titled “La Abogada.” With this song, she also debuts as a composer with Eliot “El Mago de Oz.” The melody sounds with traditional mariachi touches and talks about love. However, she is not fighting in the future to create some “corrido tumbado” about the life of her client “El Chapo” Guzman.
“At the moment no, I wouldn’t do it, but it’s something I don’t rule out either, maybe later on in my career, something I could do or make a collaboration with someone, but for the moment I don’t rule it out, but it’s not something I think would happen now,” she said.
Between the podiums and the stage
Another of the things she also described is that since she was a child, she felt at the end of everything that revolves around an artist. Still, her parents asked her for a traditional career, and it was when she decided to study law and fulfilled her family’s dream. In the meantime, she seemed to have forgotten her longing to shine on stage.
“The musical blood runs through my veins, because my father is a musical director and drummer, since I was little I was always well into music, I remember that he took me to the stage and put me a horn on the side, from three, four years old, in fact, I shared the stage many times with Grupo Mania which was a very important merengue group in Puerto Rico for those times,” she said.
It was in January 2022 when Mariel underwent bariatric surgery. This procedure to lose weight made her return her confidence and, at the same time, the desire to bring out all that vocal talent that for years she put aside: “I looked good, I felt good, and I said ‘it’s now or never,’ so I took the plunge.”

Her musical inspirations are Ana Gabriel, who is her favorite singer and whom she has the desire to open one of her concerts. She also enjoys the voice of Juan Gabriel, Roció Dúrcal, Luis Miguel, and other stars that go between ballads and regional. “I have many followers in Mexico for being the lawyer of different great personalities of Mexico. I think Mexico will receive me. I think the Mexican people will adopt me,” she added.
Mariel is one of the guests invited to parade down the red carpet of Premios Lo Nuestro, a ceremony that takes place tonight at the Miami-Dade Arena in Florida. This opportunity excites her, as she hopes to meet with personalities such as Grupo Firme, Karol G, or Christian Nodal, as she would like to collaborate with any of them.
Finally, “La Abogada” assured that her two professions are not at odds and that she will continue defending her clients in New York from her company “The Law Offices of Mariel Colon Miro, PLLC” with the same passion she gives her all in the recording studio or with the adrenaline she feels when she stands on a stage.
“One can be many things, we should not be pigeonholed into one thing, if you have a talent or several talents explore them all, it is a message that dreams come true and he who perseveres triumphs”.
