Mets go for pitching in free agency and sound big shots

The Mets are targeting the best starting pitchers on the market, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. That includes current AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray, and even includes Max Scherzer.

Scherzer is the headliner here and he would be a great addition. However, there are clear questions as to whether he would be interested.

At this stage in his career, he will prioritize winning, and the Mets did not make the playoffs last season. Additionally, Scherzer’s preference for a West Coast team was a factor in the trade deadline.

ARRIVAL OF ELEMENTS SUCH AS MARS, CANHA OR ESCOBAR CAN CALL ATTENTION TO FIRST LINE PITCHERS

Certainly, there are other clubs that may be interested in Scherzer’s services, but not all of them have begun to strengthen like the New York team with elements such as Starling Marte, Eduardo Escobar, etc.

The Mets have already significantly beefed up their offense. Maybe that will help them attract top pitchers like Scherzer.

With free agent talent still in the Mets’ offseason, the question remains whether the team will serve up all of those options or those that don’t fit into a qualifying offer.

Team president Sandy Alderson says he’s strongly inclined to keep his two first-round picks in next year’s draft. By hiring a player who received a qualifying offer, the Mets were No. 1 overall.
