Last Friday, September 3 a group of friends embarked on a maritime adventure boarding a boat that sailed from the tourist region of Higuerote, in Venezuela, to the so-called Tortuga Island, without imagining that what would be a fun day would turn into the worst of tragedies.
It turns out that being already at sea, A large wave hit the boat, splitting its hull, causing the boat to wreck.
So far, the incident has left 5 people missing and one deceased, The latter being the story that has generated the most impact and shock at the international level.
Among the passengers on this boat was a 40-year-old mother named Mariely Chacón, who managed to stay on top of the boat, completely adrift, together with their 2 children, ages 2 and 6, respectively, as well as with their babysitter.
Despite the seriousness of the accident and despite being badly injured, Chacón decided to do the impossible in order to keep her children safe and alive.
The woman, the nanny and the little ones spent more than 4 days under the powerful ray of the Sun, floating uncontrollably. Mariely drank her own urine and fed her children breast milk to prevent them from becoming dehydrated.
After several days of searching, finally the 4 people could be rescued and were taken to a hospital where both the children and their caregiver are recovering. Unfortunately, Mariely did not survive.
People say that the mother’s cause of death was electrolyte shock caused by severe dehydration, which was accelerated, probably, by having breastfed their children.
