New Orleans father shoots 1-year-old son on New Years; he was already arrested

A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly shooting his one-year-old baby with a firearm, who arrived at the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, according to a news release from the New Orleans Police Department.

The 1-year-old was shot multiple times in the Marigny neighborhood around 2 pm on January 1 and was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle. The shooting occurred at the intersection of Decatur and España streets.

Detectives identified Corey Davis, the baby’s father, as the “perpetrator of this incident, and an arrest warrant was obtained.” Davis was located Jan. 2 at a location in the Fifth District and arrested without incident, police said.

Davis faces multiple charges, which include attempted murder in the first degree, cruelty in the second degree toward a minor, assault aggravated by domestic abuse, aggravated criminal damage to property, felon in possession of a firearm, illegal use of a weapon, and theft of a vehicle.

Through a statement, Shaun Ferguson, superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department, expressed his feelings for this tragic case of violence of a father against his baby.

“This is another unfortunate incidence of violence in our city which turned out to be of a domestic nature, and also where a child, in this case a 1 year old baby, was shot by his own father – he was the victim of a tragic, senseless and violent crime. As I said before, practicing self-responsibility and implementing proper conflict resolution skills can help avoid tragic situations like this. “

Authorities have not disclosed the baby’s current health status.
