Off-duty police subdue suspected terrorist who stabbed five people on a train

An off-duty police managed to subdue a suspected terrorist who stabbed five people aboard a train in Germany.

The attack took place on a train in Herzogenrath, Germany, which was headed to Aachen (Aachen), a spa town located near the border with Belgium and the Netherlands.

A senior law enforcement official said that eThe 31-year-old Iraqi-born attacker had been investigated for possible Islamic extremism while living in a refugee shelter in 2017.

Herbert Reul, the state’s interior minister, reported that the suspect beat passengers “indiscriminately and arbitrarily,” according to Deutsche Welle.

Reul added that “based on what we know so far,” investigators believed the shooter was trying to hurt as many people as possible.

Also he praised the courage of the 60-year-old off-duty officer and the passengers who had prevented worse harm. He described the attack as a “appalling crime that was stopped in an enormous act of bravery.”

Four of the injured were treated at hospital for injuries to their hands or face and head, while one victim was stabbed in the shoulder blade, but none were in mortal danger. The attacker was also injured and was taken to a clinic.

Reul said authorities are investigating the possibility of a link to terrorism, as the man was policed ​​for possible Islamic extremism in 2017 after the refugee shelter where he lived found that he had grown a beard, changed his behavior and isolated himself from his peers.

The train had 270 passengers at the time of the attack.

About 200 agents were deployed to the scene.
