Dr. Gurvindra Johal, a 55-year-old emergency room physician, is facing criminal charges after allegedly sexually assaulting some of his patients, according to New Jersey authorities.
Dr. Johal was charged Monday with two counts of criminal sexual contact and sexual battery, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone.
One victim reported that Dr. Johal had sex with her against her will, Ciccone said. Two women alleged that the doctor touched them inappropriately while under his care at “Amboy Urgent Care,” a practice in Perth Amboy, authorities said.
The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are not ruling out additional victims, Pix11 noted. The Medicenter of Edison facility also lists Johal as its medical director, radio station NJ101.5 FM detailed.
All charges are mere accusations, and those being prosecuted are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
In a similar case, in October, nearly 150 women alleged sexual abuse or misconduct by former gynecologist Robert A. Hadden reached a $165 million settlement agreement with the hospital system that employed him, Columbia University in New York announced.
This is not the first case of sexual abuse reported in New Jersey and involving doctors. In July 2022, neurologist Ricardo Cruciani was found guilty of one count of predatory sexual assault, one count of sexual abuse, one of attempted rape, two of rape, and seven of criminal sexual acts, in a case where he was accused of having raped 6 patients. He later committed suicide while serving his sentence in Rikers Island prison.
