From the first moment he signed his signature as a new Roma footballer, Paulo Dybala caused a furor among Giallorossi fans. An example of this is that he set the record for the most shirts sold in Italy during one day. This record was in the hands of Cristiano Ronaldo, when he arrived at Juventus four years ago.
La Roma sold 530,000 shirts of the Argentine striker for 24 hours, as reported Corriere dello Sport. In this way, Dybala surpassed the 500,000 jerseys that CR7’s Vecchia Signora sold in 2018, including advance orders and online purchases.
According to the Italian newspaper, “total madness” was experienced by the incorporation of the recent winner of the Finalissima, who came to the capital team from Juventus as a free agent and signed a three-year contract. His salary would be around $6 million dollars.
Why didn’t Dybala choose Totti’s 10?
The team led by José Mourinho, in fact, offered him the use of Francesco Totti’s iconic number 10, the number that Paulo wore with Juventus in five of his seven seasons. However, the Argentine rejected it out of respect for the giallorossi icon.
“I spoke to the general manager of Roma and he asked me if I wanted to wear the number 10, which of course is very important here because of everything Francesco Totti did. I think that shirt and that number should continue to be his because of what it means for the city and the fans”, were the words of Dyabla as a new player of ‘La Loba’.
Along the same lines, he added: “I thanked him because wearing a shirt like this requires a lot of respect and responsibility. I still see it as his t-shirt. Maybe I’ll wear it one day, but for now I’m happy to have number 21, which is the number I wore when I started to be successful.”
Dybala, whose performance has been affected in the last two seasons by injuries, won 12 titles in Turin. Roma, meanwhile, finished sixth in Serie A; although he lifted the Conference League, his first European title, after defeating Feyenoord in the final.
