A giant dead shark was hung from the rafters outside Ponte Vedra High School in Jacksonville this Thursday, surprising the staff and prompting an investigation, according to the reporter News4JAX’s Marilyn Parker.

Authorities said that a group of students hung the huge dead shark on Wednesday night after gutting and storing it in a freezer.

It is worth mentioning that Ponte Vedra’s mascot is a shark leading administrators to interpret the incident as a “high level prank”.

“A group of five high school students at Ponte Vedra High School hung a disemboweled shark from the rafters of the schoolyard “ Alex AuBuchon, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, told Miami Herald.

AuBuchon said the children hung the shark carcass with two sets of wires and the shocked staff made the discovery at 8 a.m. Thursday, before cutting it up and removing it.

Some social media users criticized the macabre display on Twitter, saying the prank was inappropriate.

“This is sick,” one user wrote, stating that children should be disciplined.

Others were more lenient. “I’m more impressed that they caught the shark than what happened next,” he tweeted another account.

The St. John County School District is investigating the incident.
