Salmonella: Two New Outbreaks in 17 US States

Two new Salmonella outbreaks are reported in California and 16 other entities in the United States related to Italian-style meats. These outbreaks have sickened 36 people, 12 of them have required hospitalization.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that two Salmonella outbreaks are being investigated in which sick people report eating salami, prosciutto, and other meats. Whether the two outbreaks are related to the same food source remains to be determined.

California, Arizona and Illinois report the highest number of cases per entity (from 4 to 7); Washington, Texas, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio report 2 to 3 cases; and other states such as Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Wisconsin, Indiana, Virginia, Maryland and New York report a case, according to available data provided by the CDC.

Of those infected, 23 people who are part of the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak and 13 people who are part of the Salmonella Infantis outbreak.

Heat cold meats before eating them

Italian-style meats can often be found in antipasto or cold cuts assortments. The CDC says deli meats and hot dogs should be reheated before eating. They recommend that people heat Italian-style meats to an internal temperature of 165 ° F or until very hot before eating, especially if you are at higher risk.

Those most at risk of a serious Salmonella infection requiring medical treatment or hospitalization are children under 5 years of age, adults 65 and over, and people with weakened immune systems.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) also indicates that for safety, cooked, commercially vacuum-sealed, ready-to-eat foods such as hams should be reheated.

Salmonella infection is known as salmonellosis. It is most common in summer, when hot weather and unrefrigerated foods create ideal conditions for the bacteria to grow.

Most people infected with Salmonella experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.. Symptoms generally begin 6 hours to 6 days after ingestion of the bacteria, although they may take longer to appear. Some people may have severe diarrhea and must be hospitalized.

Many people with salmonellosis recover without treatment. Nevertheless, Salmonella infections can be life-threatening for those most at risk.
