Scientists have observed a group of long-tailed macaques in Indonesia and discovered that these apes masturbate using “stone tools”.

Researchers from the University of Lethbridge in Canada, studying a group of monkeys at the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia, found that when the macaques rubbed or hit their genitals with rocks or stones, they showed signs of sexual activity and excitement.

In a study published in the journal Ethology: International Journal of Behavioral Biology the scientists describe how the stone-pounding behavior would be followed by penile erection, or a previously present erection would last significantly longer if the monkey pounded stones on its genitalia.

Despite the difficulty in measuring female sexual arousal due to the lack of obvious outward change, the researchers also found that the monkeys were selective about the shape and size of the rock they used to rub their genitalspreferring rough edges or angular shapes.

“The fact that no other stone manipulation patterns have a temporal association with penile erection suggests that the genital rubbing or pounding of stones is clearly sexually motivatedcompared to other seemingly playful actions,” the authors wrote in the article.

Animal masturbation has been observed before in various species, including chimpanzees, dogs, and even porcupines. Primates, our closest animal cousins, have been observed to masturbate, though more commonly in captivity than in the wild.

The presence of masturbation in the behavioral repertoire of a species is thought to coincide with the mating system of its social groups.

“In a questionnaire-based study, [los científicos] found a strong association between the mating system of a primate species and male masturbation, with masturbation being more frequent in species that live in a multimale/multifemale organizational system, such as macaques,” according to the study authors.

The observation of macaques using the stones to stimulate themselves is a rare case of an animal using a tool to aid in its masturbation.

The discovery of the use of tools for sexual pleasure is an unexplored and little observed behavior.
