Sally Spinosa was sentenced Wednesday because, as a NYPD sergeant, she lied to defraud a fund created to reimburse victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Spinosa, now 56, falsely claimed to the “World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program” to have worked for 10 months at the Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island beginning in September 2001, according to a criminal complaint. That program provides medical treatment to people who were exposed at disaster and recovery sites from the attacks in Lower Manhattan in 2001.

Prosecutors said Spinosa filed false claims for years, when in fact she was pregnant and did limited work outside of the Staten Island Investigations Unit offices during part of that time. He was also completely absent on parental leave for several months.

The former sergeant’s repeated requests for benefits programs over nearly 10 years were denied. Not being upset, joined the lawsuits for the September 11 attacks and received $ 54,000, money that he was now ordered to return as part of his sentence.

As you have now admitted, Sally Spinosa stole money for programs to benefit the brave men and women of the NYPD, and first responders across the city who were injured in rescue and recovery efforts after September 11, 2001, “US Attorney Audrey Strauss said in August. “He did this by repeatedly lying about the time he spent in the rescue and recovery effort, and now he will face the consequences of those. shameless lies ”.

He faced a maximum of 20 years in prison, but as she pleaded guilty she was sentenced to two months in prison, four months of home confinement and two years of supervised release.

Spinosa was with a clean service sheet in NYPD for 33 years, from 1986 to July 2019 and was assigned to Staten Island in September 2011, noted Pix11.
