Sony plans to launch new subscription online gaming service for PlayStation users

Sony ordered the withdrawal of PlayStation Now cards in all UK retail stores. The measure, which may be extended to other countries, is part of a series of decisions carried out by the company to create a new subscription service with which to compete with Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass.

The new service, whose code name is Spartacus, will allow users to access a wide catalog of video games. The new platform is expected to embody the role of PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus, two of Sony’s most lucrative services.

Currently these services cost the user $6.99 per month for PS Plus and $9.99 for PS Now..

Currently these two systems, although they are similar, offer players different benefits. In the case of the Plus subscription, it is necessary to be able to access the multiplayer functions of most of the games available for Sony consoles.

For its part, PS Now allows users to download a handful of games monthly which are usually older, including titles that were available for the first versions of the PlayStation.

According to information published by Bloomberg, the business strategy that Sony intends to follow would involve the elimination of the PlayStation Now brand and keep only the PlayStation Plus name.

As has been known, the new service will have a three-tier system. The first of them will include all the benefits present in the PlayStation Plus. The second tier will include a robust catalog of PlayStation 4 and PS5 games, while the third tier will provide the ability to play classic PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games.

Sony’s new bet occurs after Microsoft bought Bethesda Softworks in 2020, for about $7.5 billion, one of the main video game developers and responsible for titles such as The Elder Scrolls, DOOM and Fallout 3. Thanks to this business movement, Xbox managed to expand its library of games, which ultimately benefited its Game Pass service, which costs between $10 and $15 a month.

It is estimated that the new Sony platform could be presented next spring and would cost about $15.
