Tuna without tuna DNA
In the last year Subway was involved in a great controversy precisely because of one of its proteins: tuna.
The New York Times decided to investigate Subway’s alleged fake tuna months after a lawsuit against the chain was filed in California in January. The plaintiffs noted that what Subway’s tuna sandwiches contain is a mixture that mimics the appearance of tuna, but no tuna.
On June 19, the NYT published the results of laboratory tests in which no trace of tuna DNA was found in Subway tuna sandwiches.
Subway responded that DNA testing is an unreliable methodology for identifying processed tuna that was cooked before being tested, the same reason the plaintiffs dropped their claim. The restaurant claims that in its tuna sandwiches it serves 100% cooked wild tuna.
