Aeroflot is the flag carrier and largest airline of the Russian Federation. The airline operates domestic and international passenger and services, mainly from its hub at Sheremetyevo International Airport.
Aeroflot was founded on 17 February 1923 by the decree of the Soviet Union government. The airline was created as Dobrolyot, the first state-owned airline in the USSR. Aeroflot began operations on 1 August 1923 with a fleet of four aircraft, including two Junkers F.13s and two Ilya Muromets four-engined bombers.
In the Soviet era, Aeroflot was the largest airline in the world, both in terms of fleet size and passengers carried. The airline operated the world’s largest fleet of Tu-154 and Tu-134 aircraft. In the 1980s, Aeroflot carried more passengers than any other airline in the world.
Aeroflot is still the largest airline in Russia and operates the second-largest fleet of Tu-154s in the world.
