The Africa Cup of Nations is the main international football competition for African nations, and is run by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). It is held every four years, and the most recent edition was hosted by Gabon in 2017.
The tournament is open to all 54 member nations of CAF, and is the premier continental competition for African football. The winner of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifies for the FIFA Confederations Cup, which is played every four years between the winners of the six continental championships.
The Africa Cup of Nations was first held in 1957, and has been held every four years since then, with the exception of 1965, 1974, and 1978. The tournament has seen many changes over the years, including the expansion to 24 teams in 2019.
The Africa Cup of Nations has been won by many different nations, including Egypt (seven times), Ghana (four times), and Cameroon (five times).
