Ahmaud Arbery was a young black man who was tragically killed while jogging in Georgia. His death has sparked national outrage and has brought the issue of racial violence in America back to the forefront.
Arbery was just 25 years old when he was killed. He was out for a jog in Brunswick, Georgia, when he was chased down by two white men, Gregory McMichael and his son Travis. The two men claimed they thought Arbery was a burglar and that they were just trying to stop and detain him. However, video footage of the incident shows that the two men were clearly following Arbery in their truck before they even got out of their vehicle.
Arbery was unarmed and posed no threat to the two men. Nevertheless, they fatally shot him. It is believed that the McMichaels were armed with a shotgun and a handgun.
The incident took place on February 23, 2020, but the two men were not arrested until May 7, 2020. This was only after the video of the shooting was made public and caused a national outcry.
The district attorney who was handling the case, George E. Barnhill, recused himself from the case due to his personal ties to the McMichaels. However, he wrote a letter to the police in which he described the shooting as “justified homicide” and claimed that the two men were acting within the law.
This is yet another example of the institutionalized racism that exists in America. The two men who killed Ahmaud Arbery were not arrested for over two months, despite the fact that there was clear evidence that they had committed a crime. This is yet another example of how the criminal justice system in America is stacked against black people.
The death of Ahmaud Arbery is a tragedy that has once again brought the issue of racial violence in America to the forefront. We must continue to fight for justice for Ahmaud and all the other victims of racial violence in America.
