The Line: This will be the 120 km long building that Saudi Arabia will build

The government of Saudi Arabia has presented images of a linear building 500 meters high called The Line to be built near the Red Sea as part of neoma futuristic megacity.

Stretching 170 kilometers across northwestern Saudi Arabia, the megastructure, which will have mirrored facades, will be 500 meters tall but only 200 meters wide.

Planned as part of the Neom development, The Line was designed as a dramatic alternative to traditional cities that normally sprawl from a central point.

“At the launch of The Line last year, we committed to a civilizational revolution that puts humans first based on a radical change in urban planning,” said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

“The designs revealed today for the city’s vertically layered communities will challenge traditional flat, horizontal cities and create a model for nature preservation and better human livability,” he continued.

“The Line will address the challenges facing humanity in today’s urban life and shine a light on alternative ways of living,” he added.

Saudi Arabia will have the longest building in the world. The Line will house nine million people.

The structure will consist of two wall-like structures enclosing an open area between them. At 500 meters tall, the pair of structures will become the 12th tallest building in the world, as well as being by far the longest.

The structure, which was designed to house nine million residents when complete, will contain residential, commercial and leisure areas, as well as schools and parks. The different functions will be stacked in an arrangement described by the city’s creators as Zero Gravity Urbanism.

The images show parks located between the two linear blocks, which will be connected by multiple bridges and topped with more green space. It will be completely clad with mirrored facades to give the structure a unique appearance.

The Line will house nine million people.

“The Line will have an exterior mirror façade that will lend its unique character and allow even its small footprint to blend in with nature, while the interior will be built to create extraordinary experiences and magical moments,” the Saudi government said.

A transportation system would be designed throughout the megastructure to connect both ends of the city in 20 minutes. According to the Saudi Arabian government, the structure will run entirely on renewable energy and was designed as a sustainable alternative to traditional cities.

“We cannot ignore the environmental and livability crises facing our world’s cities, and Neom is at the forefront of delivering new and imaginative solutions to address these problems,” Bin Salman said. “Neom is leading a team of the brightest minds in architecture, engineering and construction to bring the idea of building upwards to life.”

“Neom will be a place for all people from around the world to make their mark on the world in creative and innovative ways,” he continued.

The Line, first revealed last year, is part of the Neom initiative in northwestern Saudi Arabia. As we mentioned in AmericanPost.NewsNeom is part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 campaign to diversify its economy and become less dependent on oil.
