The 25-year-old athlete, from the Ineos Grenadier team, collided at high speed with a bus that had apparently stopped on the highway that goes from Bogotá to Tunja, at the height of the municipality of Gachancipá, in the department of Cundinamarca (center), when the vehicle had parked, according to the Traffic Police.

The Director of Traffic and Transport of the Police, General Juan Libreros, explained that the accident occurred at 10:00 local time (15:00 GMT), after which the cyclist was transferred to the Clinic of the University of La Sabana in the city of Chía. , near Bogota.

Given the seriousness of what happened, Bernal underwent three surgeries on Monday for the fracture in various parts of the right femur and patella, and will need neurosurgery, according to the medical report.

The clinic explained that Bernal was taken to “surgery rooms by the interdisciplinary team of general surgery, orthopedics and traumatology and at the moment the corresponding time for neurosurgery is being carried out.”

So far, they have undergone an “osteosynthesis of a comminuted right sub-trochanteric femur fracture”, an “osteosynthesis of an ipsilateral open fracture of the patella” and a “thoracostomy with drainage due to hemopneumothorax secondary to thoracic trauma”.

Widespread concern

The world of sports and Colombians in general have raised their votes for the recovery of Bernal, who was preparing for the European season on the roads of his country together with Ineos teammates such as Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz, Costa Rican Andrey Amador or his compatriot Daniel Felipe Martinez.

“Today more than ever, wishing him the best, that he recovers soon and returns to giving a show as he knows how to do it”, Martínez wrote on Instagram, who has trained these days with Bernal.

For his part, Rigoberto Urán, leader of the EF Education-EasyPost, wrote that he hopes his compatriot will return soon and said: “Now you are in a race that you are going to be victorious.”

Meanwhile, the soccer player Falcao García, striker for Rayo Vallecano of Spain, assured that he hopes for a “prompt and successful recovery” of the cyclist.

In addition to the athletes, politicians and ordinary citizens also expressed their concern for Bernal’s health and wished him a speedy recovery.

“We wish our beloved champion Egan Bernal a speedy recovery after the accident he suffered while training with his teammates. We trust that his state of health will evolve satisfactorily and that he can continue reaping triumphs for Colombia,” said President Iván Duque.

Likewise, former president Juan Manuel Santos (2010-2018) said: “Everyone praying for Egan Bernal. Our champion will come out ahead.”

Memory of another accident

Bernal’s accident recalls the one suffered by his compatriot Nairo Quintana on July 3, 2020 when he was run over by a driver while he was training on a highway in the central department of Boyacá, from which he is a native.

That caused polytraumatisms in one knee, for which he was inactive for two weeks.

Precisely the former Movistar runner wished Bernal “speedy recovery in his surgeries” and that “all the interventions that they are doing go well.”
