After Israel confirmed the first case of ‘flurone’ and France revealed the existence of the new strain IHU, again alarms were raised around the world after the discovery of a combination between two variants of the coronavirus.
Recently, the health authorities of Cyprus announced that they detected up to 25 cases of a new variant that fuses some characteristics of the Delta and Omicron strains of the covid-19 virus, so they decided to call it ‘Deltacron’.

“Currently there are omicron and delta co-infections. We have found a variant that is a combination of both, “said Leondios Kostrikis, professor of Biology at the University of Cyprus and director of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology.
According to the statements collected by the Bloomberg news agency, the specialist explained to the Signa TV network that the new variant contains the genetic signature of the omicron strain and the genomes of the delta strain.
At the moment, Leondios Kostrikis and his research group have managed to find 25 cases of the new variant ‘deltacron’ in Cyprus, which have been more frequent in infected people who are hospitalized for coronavirus, than in infected subjects who are not hospitalized.

The samples of the 25 individuals infected with deltacron were sent this Friday, January 7, to the international GISAID database of the Pasteur Institute, a French non-profit foundation that is responsible for posting the official sequencing of the new influenza variants and SARS-CoV-2.
“We will see in the future if this variant is more pathological or contagious or if it will prevail” on Ómicron and Delta, said the expert, but according to his point of view it is likely to be overshadowed by the former as it is the most contagious until the moment.
